The Regional Delegation of Trade seeks to discourage artificial scarcity and price hikes.

Large quantities of imported sweet drinks, frozen chicken and other fraudulently imported goods have been impounded in Douala. The Littoral Regional Delegation of Trade recently impounded the goods following the implementation of a number of measures, including regular prompt checks to prevent artificial scarcity and unnecessary price hikes.

During a recent operation, some products, including imported drinks, which were found to have expired since 2012, were impounded and the shops and warehouses sealed. These include shops in Akwa and some warehouses in Bonapriso. Among them were ‘Steaz drinks’ found in large quantities in a warehouse. Several other products seized during routine raids in markets and other commercial centres, were destroyed.

According to Omgba Belinga Simon, the Littoral Regional Delegate for Trade, this is one of a series of measures to protect the consumer, ensure availability of foodstuff and basic products and at low prices. He warned all who are increasing the price of rice, noting that, “We still have until June this year to study the international market to determine whether or not we will increase the price of rice.” Through partnerships with some local investors, the Regional Delegation has made available rice, flour, cooking oil, plantain and soap, among other basic products.

The products are now on sale at the Regional Trade Delegation in Akwa. The Littoral Regional Delegation has been carrying out systematic market checks, removing all products of doubtful quality, as well as mobile caravans for promotional sales of some basic necessities. This is being done with the collaboration of some investors as a way of empowering low-income households to secure just enough for themselves.
