Douala: UN Discusses Agriculture, Structural Transformation

Experts from the Central African Sub-region will on February 24, 2016, discuss the area’s agricultural potentials.

The Economic Commission for Africa, ECA, of the United Nations will convene experts of member States and sub-regional institutions in Central Africa in the metropolis of Douala on February 24, 2016. The purpose is to discuss strategies for leveraging the agricultural potentials of the sub-region in view of boasting food security and ensuring structural transformation.

The 32nd session of the Intergovernmental Committee of Experts of Central Africa meets in the economic capital on the theme: “Harnessing the agricultural potentials of Central Africa for food security and the structural transformation of the sub-region.” Representatives from member States and sub-regional bodies will discuss current and emerging development issues in order to make recommendations for industrialisation and structural transformation.

The recommendations will contribute to efforts to diversify the economies of Central Africa in the face of a sharp fall in the global price of oil. The participants will also be informed of the progress of priority programmes of sub-regional institutions as well as recent ECA initiatives.

Ahead of the 32nd session, an Ad Hoc Expert Group met in Douala from February 22-23, 2016, to review a report prepared by ECA on “Promoting intra-regional trade in Central Africa with the aid of Information and Communication Technologies.” Temfemo Adija, Head of Department for Studies, Projects and Statistics, representing the Minister of Trade, chaired the meeting in the presence of Emile Ahohé, ECA’s Central African Sub-Regional Director.
