The 27-year-old woman says her career is coloured with happiness.

 “I am a driver since 2003 and I love my job. I did not choose to become a professional driver. But I think it was divine direction that brought me to the profession of a driver. I began as female driver recruited in an international organisation. I just realised I had become a female professional driver and I stayed in the profession. It is funny to note that many passengers do not like to be transported by a female driver especially as the profession of a female driver is not developed or does not yet exist in the country.

Effectively, when I started working as a driver in an urban transport agency, a majority of passengers were worried that a female driver was on the steering wheel. But after several kilometres on the highway and while looking through the driver’s mirror, I realised that most of the passengers were sleeping. This confirmed that they knew they were in good hands. Arriving at my current jobsite, nothing was new to me since I know my job as a driver and also how to interact with people around me. I have no difficulties interacting with my male colleagues and I have realised that they admire and protect me.

My career as a driver is coloured with happiness I never believed that one day I will be a routine female professional driver. Challenges faced in my career are insignificant not forgetting risks which are managed. In the institution where I work now, there are both sexes in all sections and me being the lone female driver in my department does not make any difference. Being a female professional driver in Cameroon will all depend on the availability and endurance of any woman who will want to become one. Being a widow and a single mother of a child, I have all the time to devote to my job and family”.
