Interview: “I Will Always Be There When People Need Good Music”

Daphne, a young upcoming Cameroonian artiste, talks on her career and the content of her songs.

Who is Daphne?

I am Daphne Njie Efundem, originally from the South West Region, of Bakweri/Bayangi stock to be precise. I am a simple girl from a humble background, very enthusiastic and playful, yet firmly opinionated. Singing is my life and fun and music keep me going. I have been singing since I was a kid. I grew up singing in my church choir.

My passion for music grew further when I went to secondary school. Then, I often used music to forget difficult moments. While in university, I started going to studios to do backups for other artistes. I finally started a musical career in 2013.

Why did you entitle your first album, "Here to stay"?

My first album, “Here to stay,” is a whole speech summarised in few words. It is an assurance to my fans all over the world that Daphne is always going to be there when they need good music.

Tell us more about this album. What makes it special?

There was so much effort put into making this album. More than half of the songs in the album are brand new songs composed in 2015; while the others are from 2013 and 2014. The album took about three years of hard work, though the whole compilation was done in 2015.

I believe my music is special because of the positive approach used in writing the songs. Every track has something that will affect someone positively. While dancing or listening to my songs, you can grab a few life-changing lessons.

What happens next, now that the album is released?

Now that my album, “Here to Stay” is out and available physically for Cameroonians and digitally for the world at large, I intend to do a tour of Cameroon so that people can discover who I am and what I am made of. But this is still in the pipeline and may come later. I am also considering doing foreign tours. I just want everyone to know that Daphne is there and she is “Here to stay.”

Concerning your concert this Saturday, what should the public expect? How important is this to you?

Performing at Charlotte Dipanda's concert on Saturday March 5, 2016, at the Multi-purpose Sports Complex in Yaounde, is such an honour for me. First of all, I feel honoured to perform on same stage with Charlotte Dipanda and Ben Decca - all legends of Cameroonian music. I am also very thankful to the organisers for this recognition. I promise my fans live entertainment at a different level - so much fun and so much to expect.
