South West: Mbonge Councilors Elect New Mayor

Chief Daniel Matta Mokambe was elected on March 4, 2016, during an extra-ordinary council session.

His Royal Highness Chief Daniel Matta Mokambe was on March 4, 2016, elected as new Mayor of Mbonge Council in Meme Division of the South West Region. He replaces Chief Ekong Williams Sakwe who died on January 15, 2016. Chief Mokambe defeated his opponent, Chief Graham Oponde Misodi, by 23 votes to 19.

The election took place during an extra ordinary Council session under the watchful eyes of the Senior Divisional Officer, SDO, for Meme, Koulbout Aman David, who doubles as the supervisory authority of councils in the division. Addressing the councilors prior to the elections, the SDO  reminded them that the law provides that in case of death or absence of the Mayor, the First Deputy manages the Council for 60 days, after which new elections are conducted. Out of the 43 CPDM, SDF and ANDP councilors that make up Mbonge Council, there was only one proxy and voting was done by secret ballot.

Talking to the press after the elections, Chief Daniel Mokambe expressed his appreciation to the councilors for having bestowed their confidence on him to manage the affairs of the council. He promised to continue with the work of the late Mayor and do more so as to bring the much desired development to the council. “As chairman of the development committee of the council, there are projects we had already put in place under the reign of my predecessor. I don’t think I am going to deviate from it since we all are working for the interest and the benefit of the party and the state at large,” Chief Matta Mokambe stated.

On his part, Chief Graham Oponde Misodi, congratulated his opponent for his win and promised that the cooperation that had long existed between them would not be marred by his defeat. “Before the elections, I said whatever the outcome, we are a party, we are a house and all councilors and agents of development. I will lend Chief Mokambe my full support. Before the elections, I was the First Deputy Mayor and I still remain the First Deputy Mayor of Mbonge Council. I read the text of the party very well before going in for elections. I knew what I was doing,” Chief Graham Misodi, stressed.

Meanwhile, Senator Questor, Otte Andrew Moffa, appreciated the calm and serenity in which the election was conducted and called on the new Mayor to ensure that the needs of his population become his priority. The new Mayor of Mbonge Council, Chief Daniel Mokambe, is a Second Class Chief of Mbonge Marumba, headquarters of Mbonge Sub-division.
