Technical, Vocational Education: Upgrading Of Facilities, Staffing, An Urgent Need

Most workshops and laboratories are equipped with obsolete equipment.

Technical and vocational schools in the North West Region today are a mere shadow of themselves as most of them were created without much to show on the ground. Most schools lack workshops and laboratories, and even when they are available, the equipment is often obsolete and does not meet modern standards.

Added to this is the lack of teachers. Most students who talked to Cameroon Tribune complained that most of their teachers were French-speaking who do not know understand English well, making learning very difficult. Another hindrance is that technical and vocational education in the Anglophone sub-system of education was previously considered as being meant for not-so-bright students. However, it has been proven that technical education is what can easily put food on the table.

According to the North West Regional Delegate for Secondary Education, Sunjo George, technical students can become self-employed and can create jobs for others. This is not to downplay general education, he went on, but to be realistic, it is better to get the kind of education that can get you immediately employed or create jobs. He therefore called on parents to give their children proper orientation and encourage them to go for technical education.

Talking about development is talking about industrialisation; thus there is need for many more people from the technical field to make this dream come true in Cameroon. In the North West Region, there many poorly-equipped technical and vocational schools that need upgrading. But with the creation of the Higher Teachers’ Technical Training College, HTTTC, in the University of Bamenda, there is hope that the staffing situation in technical and vocational schools will get better. Some observers have even noted that it is high time government stopped creating technical and vocational schools and focused instead on equipping staffing existing ones.
