Motto Assoula Michel Aimé tried to release a detainee from gendarmerie custody when his true identity was uncovered.

Luck ran out on March 14, 2016 in Yaounde for a 38-year-old man who had been passing for a Superintendent of Police, SP (or ‘Officier de police principal’) as he tried to release a detained suspect from gendarmerie custody.

According to Captain Mamoum François, Commander of the Yaounde I Gendarmerie Company, Motto Assoula Michel Aimé confidently introduced himself in his office located beside the Gendarmerie Headquarters as a Superintendent of Police, while putting on the uniform. Unfortunately for Motto, a curious civilian had taken note of him as he struggled to put on the police uniform outside the gate before entering the office.

Motto Assoula Michel Aimé initially told gendarmes that he was serving with the 13^th District Police Station in Douala and belonged to the Hope Batch of Assistant Police Superintendents. After checking out the information, it was realised that he was impersonating and had earlier served time in jail in Douala for the same offence. This, is especially as he failed to produce a professional police identity card, instead showing a National Identity Card that shows he was born on August 4, 1978, in Kumba and is a student pastor.

Noticing that his trick had been uncovered, the suspected impostor later claimed that he was formerly a policeman, but had been dismissed for misconduct. However, gendarmes could not confirm this detail. Motto Assoula Michel Aimé was on March 18, 2016, transferred to the Senior State Counsel to the Mfoundi Court of First Instance, Administrative Centre, Yaounde, for possible prosecution.
