Cuba-President Obama Announces Change

The US President is in Cuba for a three-day historic visit.

US President Barack Obama during his historic visit as the first sitting American President to set foot in Cuba since 1959, has opened a new dawn in the hitherto frozen relations between the two countries. The mutually beneficial fruits of the visit were heralded when Barack Obama said, that "change is going to happen here and I think that Raul Castro understands that".

The three-day visit that started on Sunday, March 20, 2016 began being engraved in the Cuban history immediately Obama accompanied by his family touched down at Jose Marti airport in Havana.  After arriving the Cuban capital, President Obama made the first stop of his tour at the newly re-opened US Embassy in Havana, where he told staff it was "wonderful to be here", BBC reported. His plan to interact with Cubans in the streets was disrupted by a tropical storm. However, Barack Obama and his family reportedly braved the rain demonstrating to many Cubans his commitment to the new, warmer relationship.

The hallmark of the Obama’s visit was the high-level talks with the Cuban President, Raul Castro last night. The plan before the talks indicated that the two leaders would discuss trade. Mr Obama earlier reportedly told the US broadcaster ABC that he would be announcing that Google had made a deal with the Cuban authorities to expand Cuba's poor wifi and broadband access. The talks were an occasion to concretise a series of other agreements between the two countries since the thaw was announced, including commercial deals on telecoms and a scheduled airline service, increased co-operation on law enforcement and environmental protection. On Sunday, US hotel company Starwood announced it had become the first US firm to agree a deal with the Cuban authorities since the revolution of 1959. The company said it would be making a "multimillion-dollar investment" to bring three Cuban hotels "up to our standards".
