The announcement was made by the Japanese Ambassador to Cameroon during an audience with Chief Dr. Dion Ngute in Yaounde.

The government of Japan has donated the sum of 12.3 US dollars (about FCFA 7.3 billion) to relief efforts following humanitarian crisis in the Far North and East Regions of Cameroon plagued by devastating terrorism attacks. The amount was disclosed on March 23, 2016 in Yaounde by the Japanese Ambassador to Cameroon, Kunio Okamura during an audience with the Minister Delegate in the Ministry of External Relations, Chief Dr. Joseph Dion Ngute in the presence of the Resident Coordinator of the United Nations System in Cameroon, Najat Rochdi.

The Japanese diplomat said the donation is to show solidarity of the Japanese government to Cameroon and the affected population of the Boko Haram insurgencies.  “Terrorism and refugee issues are not a responsibility of just one country but a concern to every country”, he stated, adding that Japan is working together with UN agencies to assist in the humanitarian crisis in Cameroon.

Meanwhile, the Minister Delegate in the Ministry of External Relations in charge of Relations with the Commonwealth, Dr Joseph Dion Ngute, also held talks with the Director of United Nations University Institute for Natural Resources in Africa, Elias T. Ayuk, on March 24, 2016. Mr Ayuk said his visit was to express his institute’s gratitude to the government as well as update the government on the progress made so far in the implementation of the cooperation agreement signed in November 2015 between The United Nations University Institute for Natural Resources in Africa and the Government of Cameroon. The Tokyo-based University, he said, has an operating unit at the University of Yaounde I since the past 15 years with emphasis laid on training particularly on the application of ICTs in the management of natural resources.
