Government Oversight: Senators Worried Over Poor Roads, Autism

Two ministers appeared before Senators during a question-answer plenary session on April 1, 2016.

The Minister of Public Works, Emmanuel Nganou Djoumessi, has reassured Senator Saki Lamine of the Far North Region that rehabilitation of the Mora-Dabanga-Kousseri highway will soon reboot.

The two enterprises in charge suspended work following an attack by the terrorist sect, Boko Haram. “If the companies are not able to continue, then the Military Engineering Corps will do it,” reassured Minister Djoumessi during a plenary sitting for questions to government on April 1, 2016. He promised that as the security situation improves, other pending road projects will be tackled.

Responding to a question by North Region’s Senator Maurice Hamidou on the balance sheet of the road rehabilitation and construction programme as well as Cameroon’s share of responsibility and progress in sub-regional road networks, Minister Nganou Djoumessi gave a rundown of progress made so far in the implementation of the 2013-2015 programme to upgrade the quality of road networks.

Classifying works envisaged or ongoing under four categories, he disclosed that evaluation exercises have revealed a marked improvement in rehabilitation and construction of roads. “The implementation rate of the Public Investment Budget, excluding foreign funding, grew from 32 per cent in 2013 to 93 per cent in 2015,” he stated.

Concerning regional roads and trans-African road networks, Minister Djoumessi further reassured that work was ongoing on several highways such as the Garoua Boulai-Meiganga, Bamenda-Batibo-Kumba, Bachuo Akagbe-Mamfe-Ekok, Maroua-Mora and Yaounde-Mbalmayo-Ebolowa, amongst others. Senator Hamidou Maurice was also informed that the contract for studies and construction of the highway around the Lagdo Lake was about being awarded by the Ministry of Public Contracts.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Social Affairs, Nguene Irène Pauline, responded to Senator Obam Assam Samuel from the South Region that considerable care is given to Cameroonians born with autism.
