Some 2,500 delegates from over 1,000 CBC churches in Cameroon are attending the 28th General Session from March 29-April 2, 2016.
“A Church For The Community,” is the theme of the 28th General Session or four-yearly conference of the Cameroon Baptist Convention, CBC. It runs from March 29-April 2, 2016, at Nkwen Baptist Church, Bamenda. The General Session is the highest decision-making body of the CBC.
The three speakers at the event are Rev. Ambola David, Rev. Shadrack Vegah and Rev. Timothy Liombe. The agenda of the conference features praise and worship, choral singing, preaching, prayers, fellowship, small group Bible studies, launch of the CBC Development Fund, business sessions and the election of new officers for the next four years. Positions up for election include the CBC Chairman, Executive President and Vice Chairman.
It is expected that by the time curtains drop, the newly adopted CBC Constitution would have been endorsed by participants. The General Session Steering Committee Chairlady, Tina Nyanganji, told Cameroon Tribune that some 2,500 delegates and observers from about 1,030 CBC churches in the country are attending the conference. The 62 year-old, Cameroon Baptist Convention is the brainchild of North American Baptists, which initially operated in Cameroon as the Cameroon Baptist Mission, CBM.
Away from this, Baptist work in Cameroon is 173 years old, beginning in 1843 when Joseph Merrick, a Jamaican Baptist missionary, set foot on Cameroonian soil with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The CBC runs a congregational system of church government, which is unique in Cameroon. Its churches enjoy some degree of autonomy, with congregations having the right to hire and terminate the services of their own pastors as the need arises. The CBC boasts seven reputable hospitals, 30 health centres and 50 primary health units. It also runs education and evangelism departments.
