Vocational Training: Officials Step up Efforts Against Illegal Centres

The vocational training logbook was recently presented to stakeholders in Douala.

In spite of the creation of the Ministry of Employment and Vocational Training in 2004, many illegal vocational training centres have continued to crop up in the country, with the Littoral Region harbouring many of them. The centres, according to officials, offer questionable training; so also are those who graduate from them.

As a result, the Littoral Regional Delegation for Employment and Vocational Training recently organised a seminar to present the vocational training logbook to proprietors of training centres in Douala. Opening the training, the Regional Delegate, Adamou Gaskreo, disclosed that many vocational training centres operate in illegality, with some authorised ones not renewing their permits. On the other hand, others do not register candidates for State examinations or supervise them to conclude training.

According to the Littoral Regional Inspector of Training, Wanki Evélyne Nji, the respect of rules and regulations, follow up of training course while using pedagogic documents, will improve the quality of vocational training. She called on intending vocational students to be vigilant when choosing schools to enrol. “It is in the interest of such students to first come to the Regional or Divisional Delegations of Employment and Vocational Training to get the list of compliant centres,” she cautioned.

The training handled topics such as the framework for professional training, ensuring quality management in training facilities, establishing the balance between ongoing and expired agreements, and improving relations between ministerial structures and public and private stakeholders. Christian Motsebo, Service Head for Vocational Training and Guidance for Littoral Region, expressed optimism that the number of illegal vocational training centres will reduce in the near future.
