They are to take part in the African championship which also offers qualification points for the Olympic Games.

The judo national team is currently in Tunis to take part in the African championship. The team comprising six boys and six girls left the country on Tuesday with a firm determination not only to win medals but also win qualification points for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. However, Cameroon’s hopes for medals in the competition lie on Helene Wezeu who though virtually qualified for the world competition would be gunning for the continental top seat so as to make way for more Cameroonians to qualify for the Olympics.

There is also Nadine Wetie Diodjo in the +78kg category that is ranked 39^th on the world classification with 320 points and Vanessa Mballa Atangana in the 40^th position with 315 points. In the men’s category, attention will be focused on athletes like Dieudonné Dollassem, 98^th on the world ranking with 113 points and Bernadin Tsala Tsala in the -60 kg category classified 74^th with 188 points.

It is worthy to note that only the first 22 in the men’s ranking and the top 14 in the women’s classification directly qualify for the Olympic games and athletes have to continue participating in competitions so as to gain points before the final classification which will  done on May 30^th.  After this final classification, continental classifications will be done in order to award 100 participations spots to countries that will not figure among the top 22 or 14.

Africa would have 24 places; 14 for the men and 10 for the women. The distribution of these places would take into consideration all the categories. “We are certain to have three or four athletes at the Rio Olympic Games, said the president of the Cameroon judo federation, Alain Christian Kingue. “That is why we keep on taking part in competitions to enable them gain points on the general classification.
