PM Visits AFCON Infrastructures

Philemon Yang made stop-over at hotel and sports infrastructures, access roads and the Limbe Omnisports stadium yesterday, May 9, 2015.

“We have held a series of meetings. We have visited the various sites and I can tell you that the African Cup of Nations will take place in the best of circumstances in Cameroon. All the companies are working and will continue to work well. I can assure you all will go well. We will have a great tournament in Limbe, Buea and in Yaounde”.

In these words, the Prime Minister, Head of Government, Philemon Yang, briefed the press yesterday afternoon as he concluded his full-day inspection of project sites meant to host the female African Cup of Nations soccer jamboree next November and the male version in 2019 in Limbe (Fako) and training facilities in Buea, South West Regional capital.

The PM said in a prior-briefing at Mountain Hotel in Buea that his visit was to dot all the i’s and cut all the t’s so that the awaited female AFCON unrolls in the best conditions come November this year. Accompanied by half a dozen Ministers concerned, the PM put his finger on the entire infrastructure meant to host the female African Cup of Nations. The infrastructure visited included State-owned hotels, practicing football fields, access roads, parking lots in Buea and Limbe as well as the main Omnisports Stadiun in Ngeme, Limbe.

The PM who arrived Buea in the evening of May 8, 2016 began his field-day at 8am, May 9, with a briefing on the various sites. Although the various stakeholding Ministers opted to speak only during a closed-door working session that ended the visit at the Omnisports Stadium hall, in the afternoon, the Minister of Sports and Physical Education, Bidoung Mkpatt, took the floor at Mountain hotel and thanked the PM for affording to be on the field. He decried that three of the 15 contractors were defaulting and two were midway in his appreciation. He feared that after the Prime Minister’s visit those that had begun to show seriousness may decline again.

South West Governor, Bernard Okalia Bilai, as head of the Local Organising Committee, told the PM that the works were going on normally but that they were worried over a certain number of issues including the fact that some of the enterprises are showing signs of limited technical resources. He expressed the minds of the population animated by utmost enthusiasm with the new infrastructures realised.

While in Buea, the PM visited the State-owned Mountain Hotel and the Parliamentarian Flats all of which are under extension to accommodate the numerous guests. The lone hotel visited in Limbe was the State-owned Atlantic Beach which is being upgraded to a 220-room facility. He also made a stop-over at the Buea 1000-capacity Municipal Stadium and the 2000-capacity Molyko Stadium, which shall serve as practicing grounds during the competition. In Limbe, the PM visited two practicing stadiums, namely the 2000-capacity Centenary Stadium and the 1000-capacity CDC Middle Farms Stadium. These stadia are being refurbished by the Chinese company, Tian Yuan.

While at the main 20.000-capacity Limbe Omnisports Stadium, the PM was shown round the parking lots that are receiving a splendid touch as well as the double-carriage access road whose tarring is being completed. The other access roads round the Omnisports Stadium are equally being constructed with bulldozers working round the clock to catch up with the one-month remaining deadline.

The PM rounded off his visits with a close-door meeting with contractors, administrators, the Ministers and the technicians after which nothing filtered to the press.
