Governance, State Of Law: Lawyers’ Human Rights Report Adopted

The men of law and representatives of civil society organisations met in a workshop on May 6, 2016 in Yaounde.

Cameroonian lawyers have found several instances of violation of rights to life and physical and moral integrity during the year 2015. Key amongst those castigated is the terrorist group, Boko Haram, which multiplied such violations through ambushes on major highways, anti-personal landmines and enrolling young girls as suicide bombers.

This was one of the highlights of the draft of the Cameroon Bar Association’s 2015 Human Rights Report which was adopted in Yaounde on May 6, 2016 during a workshop which brought together several members of the Human Rights Commission of the Bar Association (HRCBA) and representatives of civil society organisations consulted during the elaboration exercise.

The adoption of the report is the second out of eight key activities implemented under CBA’s Bar-Governance-State of Law project funded by the European Union, to strengthen national capacities in the monitoring and evaluation of policies in Cameroon. Opening the workshop, the Secretary of the Bar Association and representative of the Bar President, Barrister Philippe Memong described the report as historical and inaugural. “

The Cameroon Bar Association hopes that a platform for dialogue would be created with government on the basis of the recommendations made so as to promote improved national policies in the domain,” he said. In effect, recommendations figure in every section of each of the Report’s four parts which respectively establish violations in civil and political rights, economic, social and cultural rights, rights for vulnerable categories of citizens as well as transversal issues like corruption and access to water.
