Presidential Bbjet 2 Appeal: Supreme Court Reduces Sentences For Marafa, Fotso

Marafa Hamidou Yaya and Yves Michel Fotso will now serve 20 years each, down from 25 years each of them received in 2012 from the Mfoundi High Court.

After a marathon sitting lasting from 3.30 pm on May 17, 2016 to 5.30 am the following morning, the Supreme Court in Yaounde finally gave its ruling in the appeal trial of Marafa Hamidou Yaya, former Secretary General at the Presidency and Yves Michel Fotso, former General Manager of the defunct national carrier, Cameroon Airlines, Camair.

Marafa Hamidou Yaya and Yves Michel Fotso were sentenced to 20 years each and will pay over 1 billion FCFA in losses cost the State by the embezzlement. Sandjon Paho Genevieve Paul Gisele, who has been on the run, saw her 15-year sentence maintained, while Nkounda Julienne was acquitted after an earlier sentence of 15 years.

Sandjon Paho Genevieve Paul Gisele, Nkounda Julienne, Marafa Hamidou Yaya and Yves Michel Fotso, were on September 12, 2012, convicted by the Mfoundi High Court in Yaounde for embezzling about 21 Billion FCFA meant for the purchase of a presidential aircraft, the Bbjet 2. Marafa and Fotso at the time each received 25-year jail terms. The offences were committed between 2002 and 2004.
