Women Appreciated For Cleaning Neighbourhoods

Some FCFA 1.25 Million and material gifts from the Mayor of the Douala II Council were distributed to them on May 28, 2016.

Five women associations in the Douala II Council area have received financial and material gifts for consciously keeping their surroundings, public spaces and structures clean. Within the framework of the sixth annual Most Clean Neighbourhood Competition, Mayor Denise Fampou with the collaboration of the Douala City Council, Hysacam and New Food offered the awards.

Association members cleaned up gutters, got rid of stagnant water, picked up liter, scraped walls, removed papers from walls, and swept, among many other things.

The first prize went to Femmes de Haut Nkam, who received FCFA 400,000 and a carton of seasoning cubes, wheelbarrows, gloves, dustbins, chloride solution, umbrellas, soap, and Mothers’ Day fabrics. Bon Voisinage Association of Newtown III received FCFA 300,000 in addition to the above materials. Meanwhile, Femmes Mifi de Newtown II received FCFRA 250,000 in addition to the material support. All other associations from the 33 neighbourhoods that make up the council area were handed various encouragement supports.

While handing over the awards the Government Delegate to the Douala City Council, Fritz Ntone Ntone, described the initiative as one that has almost singlehandedly lifted New Bell from the doldrums of sanitation to a modern neighbourhood. On her part, the Mayor of Douala II Council called on the mothers to not relent but make the task a day to day life.
