2016 G20 Summit: China Begins Countdown

Central and local government officials are fine-tuning preparations less than 100 days to the September 4-5, 2016 event.

The People’s Republic of China is putting every detail in place to make world leaders from 20 most developed economies feel home away from home when they converge on Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province for the 11th G20 Summit billed for September 4-5, 2016.

Launching the 100-day countdown to the event in the historical and culturally-blessed Hangzhou on Friday May 27, 2016, the CPC Party Secretary for the City, Zhao Yide assured the media that the organizing committee has almost rounded off with most of the construction projects for the event notably the venues to host the different meetings.  The countdown is to raise public awareness the more and fast-track other projects on course.

The city described variously as “Paradise on Earth” owing to its beautiful scenery and attractive tourists sites, is almost a vast construction site now. While renovation works are intensifying on some infrastructure to give them a facelift, others are seeing the light of day and all logistics details meticulously taken care of. Polishing works which Zhao Yide said seek to give “world leaders the pleasure they deserve when they visit the city of treasure.”

He disclosed that the first batch of about 6,000 volunteers have been recruited for the event, thousands fine-tuning their skills in the English language, over 2,000 skilful drivers recruited and trained, fully equipped media centre already in place and that all buses in the city will during the summit function on new and clean energy. Security details are also top on the agenda in the entire city as well as in the already selected and remodelled hotels to host thousands of guests awaited for the event.

Prior to the launch of the 100-day countdown, China’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Wang Yi on Thursday May 26 briefed the media on the stakes of the upcoming summit. He said the fact that two third of the global population and 80 per cent of the world’s GDP come from the G20 member countries make the Hangzhou Summit a decisive one especially given the not-so-comfortable global economic prospects at moment. Besides drawing up a sustainable global trade strategy, coming up with a blueprint for technology-driven growth, Wang Yi hoped the Chinese host will offer a milestone in the history of the G20 Summit and world’s economy.
