UK To Work For Cameroon’s Economic Improvement

High Commissioner, Brian Olley made the declaration in Yaounde on June 1, 2016.

The United Kingdom will in the coming year work more closely with British business for Cameroon to achieve economic success which is a foundation to progress. The High Commissioner of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to Cameroon, Brian Olley made the declaration in Yaounde on Wednesday, June 1, 2016 on the occasion of celebrations marking Queen Elizabeth’s 90th Birthday Party. Queen Elizabeth II is head of the United Kingdom of  Great Britain and Northern Ireland and also head of the Commonwealth.

Speaking in his Bastos- Yaounde residence in the presence  of many Cameroonian cabinet ministers, senior officials and members of the diplomatic corps, Brian Olley acknowledged  Cameroon’s huge economic potential. “Together we will continue to work in partnership with the government of Cameroon and our partners from the international community, to help realize a better future,” he said.

The United Kingdom over the years has been working to enhance excellent cooperation with Cameroon. “Suffice to say, we have worked tirelessly with many partners here to help feed and house refugees, to boost the economy through attracting investors, to help fight against terrorists and to promote human rights,” the High Commissioner specified. Focus on cooperation has been in the education domain with the UK government fully sponsoring 24 young Cameroonians in studies at Masters level in Britain and 20 women studying in Cameroon. He disclosed that each year, the UK government help around 60 Cameroonians to a better education and the same number will be helped next year.

Back to the anniversary celebration, Brian Olley said the Queen’s birthday party was a unifying factor in all of the United Kingdom, a country that unlike other countries does not have a National Day. He said they were celebrating the 90th birthday of Queen Elizabeth II whose reign has spanned seven Popes, 12 Prime Ministers including Winston Churchill, and the creation of the Commonwealth. The Queen has been constant in a changing world, the High Commissioner said and added that she has dedicated herself to serving her people.

Other highlights of the celebration included a toast, musical interludes and sharing of the anniversary cake.
