200 Holidaymakers Recruited To Clear Plastic Waste

Neat structures and neighbourhoods were rewarded during the ceremony in Deido, Douala, on June 1, 2016.

The third weekly Integral Sanitation Day and Operation Eco-collect of Plastic Waste, organised by the Douala I Council in partnership with REDPLAST, has been launched. During the ceremony in Deido, Douala, on June 1, 2016, the council announced the recruitment of 200 holidaymakers through Eco-collect to rid the municipality of all plastic waste.

The initiative has led to a reduction in accumulated plastic waste, officials said. There is also task force to henceforth punish all who do not observe the weekly Integral Sanitation Day. Members will be assisted by Municipal Police and public security officers. So far, Eco-collect has employed 500 youths in the past two editions.

The Council received gifts of wheelbarrows, pick axes, watering cans, gloves, buckets and garbage cans from its partners and distributed sanitation material to associations and local hygiene and sanitation committees. Furthermore, high schools, markets and neighbourhoods, households, hotels, restaurants, grocery shops and festival venues received special prizes. The winners included Akwa High School, Mboppi Market and the Bali neighbourhood. Anne Marie Elong, who represented the Divisional Officer for Douala I Sub-division, oversaw the ceremony.
