The lone Senator of the FSNC party is reputed to have created a niche for his party in the North Region.

Hamadou Abbo’s rise to prominence in the political scene came with his entry into Senate as lone Senator of the Front for the National Salvation of Cameroon (FSNC) party from the North Region. His stands on issues affecting life of the country have projected him as a force to reckon with especially in his Mayo Louti constituency where he and his FSNC following have been winning political territory occupied by the Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM) and the National Union for Democracy and Progress (NUDP) parties, amongst others.

His knowhow in grassroots political warfare and the force of persuasion, many political critics say, justify his place close to the party’s National Chairman, Issa Tchiroma Bakary, as a trusted and unconditional supporter.

Upon his return to Cameroon from Paris, France, where he did Higher Professional Studies in Commerce and Hotel Management, Hamadou Abbo was an early militant of the National Union for Democracy and Progress (NUDP) party. He was later amongst the handful of NUDP stalwarts who decamped to create the National Alliance for Democracy and Progress (ANDP) party. After a short stay in the Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM), Hamadou Abbo joined Issa Tchiroma Bakary for the creation of the FSNC in 2007.

Hamadou Abbo has practically brokered grassroots support in Mayo Louti where he claims to have weakened the NUDP party, opening the way for the CPDM to regain its influence. With one seat in the Mayo Oulo Council, the local branch of the FSNC party under Hamadou Abbo’s leadership is set for a showdown during next council and legislative elections. Meanwhile, he assumes his functions at the senate with political savvy, given that he knows the CPDM, NUDP and the ANDP from inside.

“This makes it easy for me to negotiate with fellow senators,” he told Cameroon Tribune. While participating actively in the ongoing session, Hamadou Abbo stays updated with the evolving situation in his native Mayo Oulo where a tornado struck recently, making several victims. “I think one of the key activities during next parliamentary break will be to go up to my constituency and educate populations on climate change,” disclosed the 62-year old married politician and father of three.
