CAR Wave Of Killings Multiply

The capital Bangui and Batangafo in the north are the recent battle grounds.

Clashes resulting to scores of people being killed are now recurrent in the Central African Republic with the most recent case being fighting between  Peuls herdsmen and armed men in Wandago and Gondava neighbourhoods in Batangafo region in the north of the country.

The fighting that started on Sunday, June 19 and extended to Monday, June 20 resulted in the death of 16 people and 20 others injured, news agencies reported. A Gendarmerie source at the Kaga Bandoro  said the first balance sheet of the fighting indicated 16 people dead most of them armed Peuls and more than 20 others injured. Maurice Yanandji  an inhabitant of Kaga Bandoro  said many people have escaped from the violence to bushes and the centre of the area. An inhabitant of Batangafo, Polycarpe Nzalaye said UN peacekeepers intervened and fighting had stopped.

Reports say the fighting was caused by the transhumance activities of herdsmen some of whom are from Cameroon and Chad who during some periods of the year take their cattle to the northern part of the Central African Republic for pasture. The herdsmen are said to be usually armed so as to protect their animals from bandits and do not hesitate to shoot at armed robbers. The fighting in the area came on the heels of another attack by armed Peuls allied to the ex-Seleka rebel group last week during which at least 10 people were killed.

Calm is also said to have returned to the capital, Bangui after fighting in the mostly Muslims- inhabited PK-5 neighbourhood. Police sources said that three people died in the clashes that erupted when armed men attempted to attack the Police Station in the Bangui III Subdivision and were pushed back by national security agents and international forces.
