North West: Belo Community Radio Board Reconciles

The deal was brokered by a team led by Peter Essoka, President of the National Communication Council.

Previously suspended through Boyo Senior Divisional Officer Order No. 99/PO/E.32/SQ5P of December 14, 2015 for unfiltered broadcasts that threatened social peace, the Belo Community Radio, BCR, operating on FM 96.4 in Boyo Division in the North West Region, is back on the airwaves. This was thanks to the intervention of the National Communication Council, NCC, which on June 21, 2016, reconciled politicised members of the Board of Directors.

Stakeholders jumped for joy when dissenting voices over the role of the community facility were buried with recommendations by the visiting NCC team to use BCR to inform the people of Belo Sub-division. In the face of disagreements among Board members over staff involved in alleged unprofessional practices and bias reporting, the President of NCC, Peter Essoka, advised political parties to leave BCR alone because political debates were not part of the role of community radios. He challenged the management of BCR to stand by the law that empowers community radios to properly inform to foster development. Essoka then stressed the apolitical nature of community radios.

Board Chairman, Prof. Chia Emmanuel and the Vice Chairman, who is also Mayor of Belo, Tosam Bernard, agreed to surmount their differences for BCR to emerge. Another Board member, Dr Gilead Ngam, said the quarrel was over, expressing hope that the radio will soon celebrate excellence. At the end, Gladys Ful, was introduced to the public as Belo Community Radio new Station Manager, with NCC stating its readiness to assist BCR stand on its feet.

Ahead of efforts to reconcile the leadership of BCR, the SDF Mayor of Belo Council, who is also Vice Board Chairman of BCR, was blamed for hijacking the radio. On the other hand, some SDF members blamed CPDM elite, including Prof. Chia Emmanuel, for orchestrating the closure of the radio.
