Istanbul Attack: World Leaders Offer Support

Tuesday’s night gun and bomb attack on the Istanbul’s Ataturk airport killed at least 41 people and injured more than 239 others.

World leaders have been expressing compassion and support to Turkey after  Tuesday, June 28, 2016 gun and bomb attack on Istanbul's Ataturk airport  that by yesterday afternoon,  had  killed 41 people, at least 13 of them foreigners, and injured more than 239 others.

BBC reported the US White House spokesman Josh Earnest as stating Washington’s steadfast support to Turkey. US Secretary of State, John Kerry said, "This is daily fare and that's why I say the first challenge we need to face is countering non-state, violent actors," Aljazeera quoted. The German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere on his part, called the attacks "cowardly and brutal". UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the terrorist attack and called for the perpetrators to be identified and brought to justice.

Talking after the attack, Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, "The attack, which took place during the holy month of Ramadan, shows that terrorism strikes with no regard for faith and values, "Aljazeera quoted him in a statement.  He is further quoted as warning that "If states, as all humanity, fail to join forces and wage a joint fight against terrorist organisations, all the possibilities that we dread in our minds will come true one by one. The bombs that exploded in Istanbul today could have gone off at any airport in any city around the world,”

Reports say three attackers arrived in a taxi and began firing at the terminal entrance of the airport. They blew themselves up after police fired back. BBC reported Istanbul's governor having confirmed 41 people had died and 239 were injured in the attack.  Some 109 of those hurt have been discharged from hospital.

Immediately after the attack, Turkey’s Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said early signs pointed to so-called Islamic State but no-one has so far admitted the attack.
