USA Independence Day Celebrated In Yaounde

Ambassador Michael S. Hoza on June 30 presided at the ceremony pointing out the multidimensional cooperation areas with Cameroon.

“We, the American and Cameroonian members of the United States of America Embassy in Yaounde, are here to work with all Cameroonians  to build a brighter future for both our peoples,” US Ambassador to Cameroon, Michael Stephen  Hoza said on Thursday, June 30. He was speaking at the US Embassy during celebrations marking the 240th  anniversary of the independence of the United States of America.

The US diplomat traced the continued strong ties of friendship whose focus is on a bright future of peace and prosperity with each aspect illustrated by a projected image on a giant screen. He said USA has partnered with Cameroon to defeat the violent extremism of Boko Haram, provide peacekeepers to the United Nations, to bring stability back to the suffering people of the Central African Republic, defeat pirates in the Gulf of Guinea, fight infectious diseases, eradicate polio, defeat HIV/AIDS and build health sector capacity to prevent, detect and respond to virulent pandemics like Ebola or Avian Bird Flu , and to take on the scourge of malaria.

The US government has also sponsored people to people programmes, that have brought Fulbright scholars, International Visitors and Young African leaders to America, partnered with Cameroon at all levels to sustain the engagement of Peace Corps Volunteers , promote private sector investment in Cameroon, like Taylor Guitars and Crelicam.

The celebration was focused on the theme “Our presidential election, the mark of our democracy for more than two centuries.”  He said the US democratic journey started in 1776 when subjects of the British King in the American colonies declared their independence. The American Founding Fathers then based the country’s democracy on the democratic traditions of Athens.

Michael Hoza said for over 240 years US democracy has been imperfect, deficient but constantly being ameliorated and always guided by the core values and essential principles. The event was attended by some Cameroon cabinet ministers, notably the Vice Prime Minister Amadou Ali, External Relations Minister, Lejeune Mbella Mbella, other national dignitaries and members of the diplomatic community.
