Keeping The Guard!

One must be honest to say that the recent denouement in the Central African Republic resulting in an elected government that saw the putting in place of a government of national unity has not produced the expected results on the ground given the very high premium the exercise was expected to have generated.

It all started from the kind of government the newly-elected leader Faustin-Archange Touadera put in place and which, rather than addressing the issues the election was initially supposed to address, went ahead to incorporate all the renegade forces that were, in the first place, responsible for all the chaos in the CAR.

It did not take long before Cameroon began to feel the full import of this situation. The Mayor of Lagdo, captured within Cameroonian territory and taken into CAR territory as well as many other Cameroonians, have not found safety yet; so it is illusory, from a Cameroonian perspective to think of a solution as at now. What does this mean for our country, which has so far given all it has not only to ensure that the populations along the entire Cameroon-CAR border area are safe, but also to receive and properly accommodate the hordes of refugees fleeing from the conflict situation in that brotherly African country into Cameroon?

It simply means all the arsenal put in place at the height of the conflict, must be maintained if only to ensure the security of the local populations; Security too has to be stepped up especially in the refugee camps within the Cameroonian territory where many inmates may want to use the new openings to create new and difficult security challenges for our defence and security forces. The posture, therefore, has to be one of sustained vigilance so as to ensure that no new security challenges occur.

And even more important is the need to keep a permanent watch over the border areas almost in the similar manner as at the time strife was at its peak. And when the necessary security enforcements are put in place, it will also be necessary to ensure a better government presence through life-saving socio-economic projects that quickly impact the lives of ordinary Cameroonian citizens in the East Region; for, it must be said that the influx of foreigners attracted by mining activity - and without visible government control - has tended to leave the impression of the local population being abandoned to itself. Nothing must be taken for granted. Government must keep guard!
