Hard Times For Turkish Coup Plotters

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan wants the reintroduction of death penalty.

Future coup d’Etat planners and perpetrators in Turkey will have to rethink their decision  as President Recep Tayyip Erdogan  has announced draconian measures against Friday, July 15, 2016 foiled coup plotters  going to the extend of calling for the reintroduction of the death penalty, The Telegraph reported.

BBC cited government sources as saying that 161 civilians and police and 104 plotters were killed in ensuing clashes and more than 1,440 injured in the capital city, Ankara and another major city, Istanbul. The attempted coup began on Friday night when a faction of the military took over key bridges in Istanbul and attacked parliament buildings in Ankara.

“They will pay a heavy price for this”, Mr Erdogan warmed. He is further quoted as declaring that, “This uprising is a gift from God to us because this will be a reason to cleanse our army,” The declarations have been matched by actions on the ground as nearly 3,000 soldiers have been detained and some 2,700 judges sacked on Saturday as the government sought to re-assert its power.

On Saturday night, thousands of supporters poured onto the streets of Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir to demonstrate their loyalty to Mr Erdogan after a tumultuous 24 hours. In an astonishing and at times brutal 13-and-a-half hours, which at one point reduced Mr Erdogan to broadcasting to his nation via a mobile phone, street protests and military forces loyal to the Turkish leader suppressed the coup plotters.

Turkish authorities named Akin Ozturk, a former air force commander, as one of the “masterminds of the coup” alongside two army generals, Adem Huduti and Avni Angun.  President Erdogan has also accused his old foe Fethullah Gulen, a Muslim cleric and former ally, now living exile in the United States of America. He has called on the US government to extradite Fethullah Gulen. The cleric has denied involvement in the coup attempt.
