Djikada Monique, “La Doyenne”

She is record holder in javelin throw and won gold during the cup of Cameroon recently in Limbe.

Djikada Monique is the dean of athletes of the FAP athletics club and was winner of a gold medal in javelin throw during the first edition of the cup of Cameroon in athletics which took place recently in Limbe. When she began practicing athletics in Maroua in 1998 little did she know she will one day rise to the pinnacle of success. Her performance caught the eye of senior military officers who enrolled her into the military.

Djikada says she started with running and later switched to javelin throw on the advice of her coach. Immediately after switching to javelin throw, Djikada Monique beat the reigning Cameroon champion and since then has never been dethroned as champion of the discipline. She won the silver medal during the African championship in Dakar-Senegal and is the record holder of javelin throw in Cameroon with a distance of 54 metres.

Owing to her experience, Monique Djikada alias “Le way fort” or “Mama Monique” as she is fondly called serves as inspiration to the younger generation of athletes who always come to her for advice. Despite her job as gendarmerie officer, Djikada says she still find time to train, carryout her office duties and take care on her only child, Mohammad Dehir who also happens to be a talented footballer. With age beginning to weigh on her, Monique is contemplating switching over to coaching of children. The athletics federation has shortlisted her as one of the people to undergo training for the grooming of young talents.
