President Faustin-Archange Touadéra was warmly welcomed during the Kigali AU Summit.
After three years of absence, the Central African Republic has been re-admitted into the African Union. The country that now has a democratically elected President, Faustin-Archange Touadéra was re-admitted after a period of suspension during the 27th Summit of the African Union Heads of State and governments that held in Kigali, Rwanda last weekend.
Talking to RFI, President Touadéra said he was proud because for the past three years, his country was suspended from the AU. He said the re-admission was due to the return to constitutional order in the country. Touadéra said his peers congratulated and encouraged him in Kigali, stating that African leaders have much hope for the Central African Republic.
Besides talking about the reception accorded him at the summit, the Central African Republic Head of State answered questions on the postponement of the election of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission to the January 2017 summit. He said the rules and regulations of the union had to be respected with regard to the election.
According to Mr Touadéra the leaders debated on the issue and he hopes that in January 2017, a new chairperson will be elected to replace Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma who was elected during the summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in 2012.
The Central African Republic delegates, the President said, participated in the voting of the three candidates who competed for the post, though none of them obtained the required two-thirds majority to have an outright victory.
Before the election of Touadéra, the past two Presidents, Michel Djotodia who came in through a coup d’Etat and Catherine Samba-Panza, the transitional president were prohibited from sitting in AU summits.
