The civilians evacuated from the capital Juba included Ugandan, Kenyans, Rwandans and people of other nationalities.

Fighting that broke out between government forces loyal to President Salva Kiir and forces loyal to ex-rebel leader and now First Vice President Riek Machar, has reportedly abated but with one of the major consequences being the evacuation of foreign nationals from the capital, Juba the scene of the fighting.

The Ugandan army said on July 20, 2016 that it evacuated 38,000 civilians caught up in the fighting, Mail Online reported.  Army spokesman Paddy Ankunda is quoted as saying that "the total number of civilians evacuated from South Sudan by road under protection of the UPDF (Ugandan army) since the start of the operation has reached 38,000". He further reportedly said that most of those taken across the border were Ugandans but "they were joined by hundreds of Kenyans, Rwandans among other nationalities who wanted to leave South Sudan for their safety."

The Ugandan army's rescue operation involved a heavily protected convoy of 30 vehicles which have been ferrying people 200 kilometres (125 miles) from Juba to the Ugandan border. Mail Online further, cited Paddy Ankunda as saying that once the evacuees safely reach Ugandan territory, helicopters take young children, the sick and pregnant women to a hospital in Gulu, in the north of the country.

The United Nation’s High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), Pulse newspaper reports, estimated that 10,300 South Sudanese found refuge in Uganda between Friday, July 15 and Tuesday, July 19, 2016.
