UN CAR Force To Continue Until November 2017

The United Nations Security Council wants the authorities to implement a genuine and inclusive reconciliation.

The United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) will continue work with an authorized troop ceiling of 10,750 military personnel in the country until November 15, 2017.

UN Security Council members during their meeting of July 26, 2016 unanimously adopted the resolution extending the mandate of MINUSCA intended to provide the mission time to assess the post-transition process in the country, a press release from the UN News Centre read.

The Council said the mandate of MINUSCA  would include immediate priority tasks, such as the protection of civilians by “maintaining a robust, mobile and flexible posture,” the promotion and protection of human rights, and facilitation of a secure environment for the immediate, full, safe and unhindered delivery of humanitarian assistance, the release specified.

Other key priorities would include provision of  support for the reconciliation and stabilization political processes,  extension of state authority and for security sector reform and disarmament, demobilization and reintegration programmes.

The council members used the occasion to call on the authorities of the Central African Republic to, “urgently implement a genuine and inclusive reconciliation, and urged them to address the presence and activity of armed groups by implementing a comprehensive strategy that prioritizes dialogue and the urgent implementation of an inclusive disarmament, demobilization, rehabilitation and reintegration programme and security sector reform,” the release further read.
