Cameroon’s hope of winning a medal in weightlifting at the Olympics in the women’s category lies solely on Fouodji Sonkbou Archangeline.
“La force tranquille” as she is fondly referred to owing to her timid looks and taciturn nature, emerged to the limelight during the African championship in Yaounde which also served as the Olympic qualifying event, when she won three gold medals thereby enabling the country to clinch an Olympic spot.
Though in her maiden participation at the Olympics, Fouodji has some international experience, having emerged vice African champion during the African Games in Brazzaville. More so, she is known for her tenacity and courage in the face of adversity. She will be competing in the 69kg category.
Minkoumba Petit David: The Diesel Engine
Contrary to Fouodji Sonkbou, Mintomba Petit David did not win his qualification ticket for the Olympic Games from the African championship in Yaounde but owing to his position on the world ranking. He however won two silver medals during the competition in the 75kg, and 94kg categories respectively.
He will be contesting however at the Olympics in the 94kg category. He is also vice African champion and the fact that he was the best placed Cameroonian athlete on the world ranking attest to the fact that his performance has been on a steady progress.
