Gift Of 500,000 Computers: Students Thank Paul Biya

A ‘thank you’ march took place yesterday in Yaounde, bringing together university students from State and private institutions of higher learning across the country.

The signing of a convention between the government of Cameroon and a Chinese firm for the supply of 500,000 laptop computers to students in both State and private universities registered in the 2016/2017 academic year has provoked spontaneous reaction from the student community in Cameroon.

Apart from organising ‘thank you’ marches in respective institutions, students from State-owned and private institutions of higher learning marched from the Yaounde Conference Centre to the 20th May Boulevard yesterday, August 3, 2016, to express appreciation to the Head of State for the “One student, one computer” operation.

The students, who mobilised from in and out of Yaounde, addressed a motion of thanks to the President of the Republic for his fatherly gesture and many other things geared towards the empowerment of the youth such as the special Triennial Youth Emergency Plan to the tune of FCFA 102 billion announced on February 10, 2016. According to the motion of thanks read by Martin Steve Zang Ambassa, a student of the Yaounde Higher Teachers’ Training College, the students pledged to stand by all actions initiated by President Paul Biya to improve the wellbeing of Cameroonians.

They reaffirmed their unconditional support to the Head of State, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, for the complete eradication of the nebulous terrorist sect, Boko Haram and acts of aggression intended to perturb peace, stability and national integration. Zang Ambassa said the donation of 500,000 computers by the Head of State to university students is testimony of his determination to promote excellence and digital economy within the university milieu.

The motion of thanks was handed to the First Assistant SDO for Mfoundi, Gilles Christian Sadi, for forwarding to the Head of State. This was in the presence of the Director of University Solidarity and Dialogue, Prof. Aboya Endong Manase, who represented the Minister of Higher Education.
