Profiling Cameroon's Olympic Athletes

Among them are those who stand some chances of winning medals. Ali Annabel Laure: The Old Broom

Ali Annabel Laure is the most experienced of the three athletes who will be representing Cameroon at the Rio Olympics in wrestling having taken part in the two previous editions of the world event. She attained the 8th finals in Beijing 2008 and progressed to the quarter final round in London 2012 and will therefore be banking on that experience to create an impact in Rio.

She was the first wrestling athlete to qualify for the Rio games after obtaining a gold medal in the qualifying event. She is nine times African champion and won the silver medal in the women’s 75kg category during the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow 2014.

Muambo Ndolo Rebecca: Joker in the Pack

Muambo Rebecca has been evolving under the shadow of the star freestyle wrestler, Ali Anabel Laure, but has been quietly making her progress and may well be the surprise guest at the podium for medals. She picked up her qualification ticket during the qualifying event in Yaounde where she won a silver medal and has been three times African champion.

Prior to the Rio Olympics, she benefited from an Olympic scholarship that enabled her to train in Senegal. Though she sustained a minor injury in the process Ndolo left Cameroon with a firm determination to make her presence felt in Brazil.

Essombe Tiako Emilienne: The "Neophyte”

Of the three musketeers in wrestling, Essombe Tiako is the least experienced but not less talented. She has been gradually making a name for herself in wrestling and hit the public’s eye during the African Games in Brazzaville when she emerged vice African champion.

She confirmed the good performance by emerging second again during the Olympic qualifying tournament in Yaounde. She was third in the African championship and emerged 5th during the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. She will be in her maiden participation in the Olympics in Brazil and could well make the trial stride a master’s strike.
